NOTE: as mentioned last week, there will be a short sectional rehearsal with the alto saxophone section tonight at 6:00pm.

Order of Rehearsal:

  •  Warm Up – Random Major Scale, Prairie Wedding @57-60 and @80 to end, Three Folk mvt2 brass exposed portion, mvt3 @42 to end
  • Sightreading: 66 Festive and Famous Chorales for Band
  • Prairie Wedding – focus on opening to 37, with special attention on harmonic lines. @29 to 37 with clarinets and bassoon. Then we will work to clarify tempo change @37. Next it is @80 to the end for tempo, rhythms and notes. We will then work on tempo change. Finally, we will put it all together in a read through.
  • Petty Harbour – run opening, then @7-24 (with solo line), continue to refine slight tempo change @38, final piece of the puzzle is to insert breath/breaks at the end of phrases. Rehearse fermata 5 measures from the end. The stop, then the entry of the solo line.
  • Scene from Iqualuit – run through. Correct any remaining issues with percussion parts, rhythms/notes, or tempos.
  • Hallelujah – run clarinets only @ 9-21 (with no melody), then run 21 through ending (no melody), finally add melody lines back in, remember balance @37-45, we will revisit the sixteeth note runs, finally ending with @85 to the end (clarinets & bells)
  • IF TIME: Middleton March – read through at tempo, will look at new alto sax & trumpet (horn) parts, continue to refine

3 rehearsals left before Spring Concert

NOTE: as mentioned last week, there will be a short sectional rehearsal with the clarinets and bassoon player tonight at 6:00pm. Our focus will be on the exposed section of Prairie Wedding and if time remains, the clarinets will get to run the exposed parts in Hallelujah a few times on their own.

Atlantic Festival of Music – I received an email from the organizers of the AFM along with a tentative schedule for the festival. According to that schedule, the concert band is to perform on April 25th at 5:00pm on the Seton Stage. Please remember that arrival time for the festival is to be one hour prior to our performance time.

Atlantic Festival of Music – I know the dates we have been assigned for our performance in the upcoming Atlantic Festival of Music, though I have not had our exact performance times confirmed. The Concert Band is scheduled to perform on Wednesday, April 25th, 2018.  In the past they made great efforts to schedule us at the end of the day,  usually this means a 4:30pm, a 5:00pm or a 5:30pm performance time. We try and arrive an hour before we go on stage.  I will confirm the time as soon as I am told what it is.  Also, please note… there will NOT be a concert band rehearsal following the festival performance that evening.

SECTIONALS: As I mentioned last week, I would like to schedule sectional rehearsals in the coming weeks. These rehearsals will not cost any additional fee for our members but will count as a ‘make up’ rehearsal for the rehearsal we cancelled due to inclement weather on January 17th. Below is the proposed schedule for these sectional rehearsals.

Flute / Oboe / Violin: Saturday, Feb 24th @ 9:30-11:30am

Halifax Community Band Festival

Also, don’t forget about our very own Halifax Community Band Festival being held at Mount Saint Vincent University on May 25th through 27th 2018! This is the weekend we host players from various different community bands from all over the Maritime provinces for a fellowship of music making and networking. Make sure you mark it on your calendar! Its a great chance to learn from great guest conductors and meet new friends who love to play as well!

Yamaha Sponsored Clinician: Kevin Hamlin

Recently retired as head of music at Collingwood Collegiate, Kevin Hamlin has been appointed to be Yamaha’s first Educator-in-Residence. Kevin’s near 30-year career highlighted some of the highest retention rates of most school music programs in Canada.

● Arts Department Leader and Music Department Head at Collingwood Collegiate for 29 years, building one of the largest and most diverse programs in the province of Ontario.
● National Level Adjudicator: MusicFest Canada Nationals and other Regional Festivals across the country.
● Awarded Keith Mann Outstanding Band Director (2015) by MusicFest Canada National governing body. This award is given to only one music teacher chosen from across the country each year.
● Regular presenter at Ontario Music Educator’s Conference on a wide range of topics.
● Guest speaker at University B. Music programs, Faculties of Education, School Board workshops.
● Workshop clinician for school Boards and individual schools.
● Completely versed in all aspects of program development, class pedagogy, rehearsal techniques, and Festival preparation.
● Effective communicator in front of audiences of any size.
● Awarded Collingwood Arts Award (2015)
● Awarded Order of Collingwood (2016)
● Chosen as Yamaha Music Canada’s first Educator-In-Residence, working across the country adjudicating band festivals, providing Board wide workshops, and individual school based clinics.

  7. Old Churches – will break down each gregorian chant style section of the piece and play these individually first, then will begin putting it all back together

  3. Three Folk Miniatures, Mvt 1 – will work on getting all of the  full band shot note passages together… particular attention will be given to off beats.
  4. Three Folk Miniatures, Mvt 2 – continue refining our understanding of 6/8 time, clear up entries after each fermata, trumpets please have your straight mutes
  5. Land of the Midnight Sun – will begin with slower opening to 15. Then, if time, will begin digging into the faster portion of the work
  6. Rocky Mountain Lullaby – continue working on and clarifying the opening… will run through opening a few times to create effect of hiking through the rocky mountains.

Halifax Community Band Festival

Don’t forget about our very own Halifax Community Band Festival being held at St. Mary’s University on May 26th through 28th 2017! This is the weekend to host players from various different community bands from all over the Maritime provinces for a fellowship of music making and networking. Make sure you mark it on your calendar! Its a great chance to learn from great guest conductors and meet new friends who love to play as well!
