Week 8
June 28, 2017

MUSIC THEORY NOTES: If you have not done so already, please take a moment to print off the handouts entitled Notes 3, Notes 4 and Notes 5 located on the Concert Band’s Download Resources page of the website. The handouts are located beneath the music.

Objectives:

    1.  Warm Up – Bach and Before for Band (David Newell)
    2.  Caprice – will continue to work on keeping the tempo up and the feeling light, we will work through tempo changes again, continue to work on notes/rhythms/articulations/phrasing and balance.
    3. Ave Verum Corpus – read through
    4.  Short Lecture – Music Theory 4: Rhythm Counting
    5.  Activity March – read through
    6. Grant County – rehearse ending and work backwards

NOTE: I was asked by a band member to pass this information along, I am always willing to support our band members in their own personal growth in music!

Week 7
June 21, 2017

SPECIAL SECTIONAL / CLINIC : 6:00pm Oboes – we will be discussing and working on embouchure, tone, air/breath support, fingerings, supporting your sound, reeds, long tones, etc…

MUSIC THEORY NOTES: If you have not done so already, please take a moment to print off the handouts entitled Notes 3, Notes 4 and Notes 5 located on the Concert Band’s Download Resources page of the website. The handouts are located beneath the music.

Objectives:

    1.  Warm Up – Bach and Before for Band (David Newell)
    2.  Ave Verum – will read the opening of the piece a few times with only one player per part, discuss intonation, balance and dynamics
    3. Hawaii Five-O – review new rhythm pattern throughout, run inner parts together, then add percussion and melody
    4.  Short Lecture – Music Theory 4: Rhythm Counting
    5.  Activity March – review tempo, remember sffz for all, remember dynamic change first time to second
    6. Mallet Maniacs – review tempo, rhythm @13, balance and work ending

    1.  Warm Up – Bach and Before for Band (David Newell)
    2.  Caprice – @45 Moderato section and transition back into Da Capo section
    3.  Short Lecture – Music Theory 3: Instrumental Transposition and Music Theory 4: Rhythm Counting
    4.  Grant County Celebration – run through, followed by rehearsing the ending then moving backward

Objectives:

    1.  Warm Up – Bach and Before for Band (David Newell)
    2.  Grant County Celebration – run through only, remembering everything we discussed last week in rehearsal
    3.  Mallet Maniacs – balance with mallet section, briefly rehearse mallet soli sections, then full band sections
    4.  Ave Verum Corpus – intonation, discussions of balance and dynamics
    5.  Activity March – read through only
    6.  Caprice – repeated eighth note parts = light, then read through to @45, after which we will focus rehearsal on @45 Moderato section

Week 4

Objectives:

    1.  Warm Up – Bach and Before for Band (David Newell)
    2. Grant County Celebration – run through, will be working on transitions a bit tonight… 4/4 to 3/4 time, @27 thru 35 with tempo charge, tempo change at DC, @27 then to coda
    3. Hawaii Five-O – work with drum set and auxiliary percussion parts, change rhythms for melodic line, practice parts with new rhythm pattern
    4. Caprice – revisit all repeated eighth note parts first then add bass line (inc. tambourine), then read through to @45, after which we will focus rehearsal on @45 Moderato section
    5. Ave Verum Corpus – intonation, discussions of balance and dynamics
    6. Mallet Maniacs – read through with attention to detail in mallet parts

    2. Caprice – work all repeated eighth note parts first then add bass line (inc. tambourine), rehearsal will focus on beginning section to @45
    3. Activity March – review last week’s work: get solid idea of tempo, various articulations in bass line, sffz for all, @39 watch for 2nd time only, clarify road map
    4. Ave Verum Corpus – stay tuned for focus
    5. Mallet Maniacs – play under tempo for clarity
    6. Grant County Celebration – Read Through only

Objectives:

      1.  Warm Up – Bach and Before for Band (David Newell)
      2. Activity March – get good solid feel for tempo, bass line watch for differences in articulations, sffz for all, @39 watch for 2nd time only, clarify road map
      3. Grant County Celebration – rehearse measures 3-4 for rhythm, work trumpets @15, then low winds @15, rehearse time changes “5 sections”, address tenuto before @42, discuss road map more clearly, work coda/ending
      4. Caprice – work all repeated eighth note parts first then add bass line (inc. tambourine), rehearsal will focus on beginning section to @45
      5. IF TIME – Mallet Maniacs – play under tempo for clarity

In May, each member of the Second Chances Concert & Jazz bands will be asked for their summer season’s registration fee.
$120  registration fee (1st group – summer rate)
$60  registration fee for any additional ensemble (summer rate)

Halifax Community Band Festival
Don’t forget about our very own Halifax Community Band Festival being held at St. Mary’s University on May 26th through 28th 2017! This is the weekend to host players from various different community bands from all over the Maritime provinces for a fellowship of music making and networking. Make sure you mark it on your calendar! Its a great chance to learn from great guest conductors and meet new friends who love to play as well!

Annapolis Royal Community Band Festival
July 21st – 23rd, 2017
Annapolis Royal Fire Hall, 5 St. Anthony Street
The Annapolis Basin Community Band is again hosting their annual community band festival in July and we would encourage you to be a part of it.  It is a wonderful opportunity for you to perform, learn and be conducted by high level conductors/teachers.
